Government Medical College (GMC), Kadapa, formerly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), is a premier government medical institution located at Putlampally Village, Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.
The foundation stone of the institution was laid by the late Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and it was inaugurated on 27 September 2006 by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, the then Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
Spread across a sprawling 210-acre campus, the institution has emerged as an important center for medical education and healthcare services in the Rayalaseema region. The college functioned as a Semi-Autonomous Institution from May 1, 2008, and was subsequently redesignated as Government Medical College and Government General Hospital in 2019 following the abolition of the Semi-Autonomous Act.

ADMISSIONS
Government Medical College, Kadapa commenced its MBBS programme in 2006 with an annual intake of 150 students. In the academic year 2019–20, the intake was enhanced to 175 seats, including 25 seats under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category.
As per the orders of National Medical Commission and Medical Assessment & Rating Board., for the year 2026-27, the intake is increased by another 75 seats with total of 250 seats per annum.
The institution has successfully completed 15 MBBS batches and educated more than 2,275 medical students. At present, approximately 875 undergraduate students are pursuing their medical education at GMC Kadapa.
Admissions are conducted strictly as per the regulations and guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Government of Andhra Pradesh, and Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences.
CURRICULUM
The MBBS curriculum is structured in accordance with the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), India.
The programme integrates classroom teaching, laboratory training, clinical exposure, community medicine, and research-oriented learning to ensure comprehensive medical education.
Students receive extensive hands-on clinical training through Government General Hospital, Kadapa, enabling them to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional values required for modern medical practice.
EXAMINATIONS
Government Medical College, Kadapa is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh. All undergraduate examinations are conducted in accordance with the regulations, academic calendar, and evaluation guidelines prescribed by the University and the National Medical Commission. Continuous assessment, internal evaluations, practical examinations, and university examinations are conducted to ensure academic excellence and competency-based learning outcomes.
